Close to 50 million people in America are impoverished.
1 out of 2 in the U.S. is near the poverty line.
How can we end poverty in America?
Is there anything that we can do to change the problem of poverty in America?
In 2014 the Tavis Smiley Foundation partnered with the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland to launch a $75,000 Social Innovation Challenge to find solutions to hunger, education, and sustainability. Three winners were chosen.

After which, Tavis Smiley Foundation’s four year poverty initiative to alleviate poverty in America with a national civic engagement and communication program began:
