UPDATE: General Mills has voluntarily recalled some Gluten-Free Cheerios boxes
General Mills has recalled certain boxes of Gluten Free Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios for containing wheat though they are labeled Gluten Free. They acknowledge this as a huge mistake and have taken measures to ensure all production past these dates are in fact gluten free. Please see the image below for the “Better If Used By” dates (all dated for July 2016) contaminated with wheat and check your boxes.
Go to Cheerios.com for more info on this voluntary recall.
My daughter’s biggest complaint when our family switched to a gluten free diet in the beginning of the year was that I no longer bought her favorite cereal. Her whole little life she had breakfasted, snacked, and enjoyed her Cheerios™. How could I deprive her?
Easy, it hurt my son’s stomach to eat gluten, so we avoided anything that was not gluten free in our home. Everywhere he goes he has to choose which foods are okay for him to eat. I want home to be a haven where he can open the cupboard and know that it’s safe for him to eat anything that is in there.
We have found plenty of wonderful gluten free cereals, but she still pined for her precious Cheerios.
Then, I found out some fantastic news…
Gluten Free Cheerios are now available!
I was thrilled!

Cheerios have always been one of my favorites as well.
General Mills was going to send me a box of Gluten free Cheerios to try so I can honestly tell you if they are truly any good. A very large box arrived a week later and I was puzzled as to what it could be. I opened the box and when my daughter leaned over and peeked at the treasure inside, she freaked out! I wish I had had my camera ready; I would love to share that video!
Inside the box was not only one box of Gluten free Cheerios, but a selection of every single flavor! Five boxes all together!
My daughter started screaming and jumping up and down! Then she ran in circles all over the house. She was so ecstatic!
She wanted to open them immediately, but being a blogger, I told her to wait till next morning; I needed to take some photos.
It was worth the wait.
She got to choose the flavor she wanted, Gluten Free Honey Nut Cheerios and my son chose the one he desired, Gluten Free Frosted Cheerios, that next morning.
Normally, I don’t open a new box until one box is empty, but in this case, I let them open both. Those were some happy kids!
So, were they as delicious?
Every bit!

I enjoy gluten free cereal as the perfect GF midnight snack.
This video shares how much work went into making a huge brand like Cheerios gluten free. It’s fascinating to watch and I recommended showing it to your little engineers. They’ll learn one person can make a huge change as well as how much math, science, engineering, building, and planning on a large scale went in to making something as every day ordinary as a box of cereal. Something most of us don’t give a thought to.
It’s all the same goodness you’re used to, they just make sure the oats are not contaminated with wheat flour.
It’s a beautiful story really.
An engineer at General Mills for more than 50 years, after discovering his daughter-in-law was diagnosed with Celiac disease, he set off on a nearly six-year mission to make Gluten-Free Cheerios.
Gluten-Free Cheerios were finally achieved by changing the ingredient-sorting process — not the ingredients themselves. (The one exception is for Multigrain, which was reformulated to include sorghum and millet instead of wheat and barley.)
You can find your own Gluten-Free Cheerios by looking for the Gluten-Free seal on packaging. It is beginning to appear in stores now, but will be almost fully available in September and at the same price!

I’m so happy to learn that Cheerios have gone gluten free. I have several friends who cannot eat it, and some friends with kids who can’t, so this is a great option for them. Your daughter is absolutely adorable. I hope she continues to enjoy her favorite treat!
She looks so happy! I am glad she is able to eat her favorite cereal again 🙂
