Unexpected Gift from a Child

Sandy Toes Creations: A Thoughtful Child

It’s a beautiful thing to witness your child caring for
someone other than themselves.

Wayman Publishing and the Bloggers Survival Guide are celebrating the release of the audio version of The Bloggers Survival Guide with a BlogFest competition for telling the story of a moment in your role as a parent or a child looking up at your
parent(s) that you could remember was the best the moment of parenthood
you have ever witnessed.
Winners will  be published in a book of inspiring short stories and 50% of the proceeds for this Anthology will be donated towards the
charity for the rescue of abducted children!
The most inspiring thing just happened, so I decided to share it with you and enter the competition:

I try to teach my children to be understanding, empathetic, caring, and generous. I believe these lessons are just as important as academics,
if not more so. Recently one of my kids proved just how big of a heart he has!

Sandy Toes Creations: A Thoughtful Child

Grandma always lived close by and we were around her constantly.
She had a huge personality that would fill the room! We loved her so much, but
she passed away suddenly and unexpectedly earlier this year. It has been hard for us to adjust to this new life without her.
My husband was always very close to his mom and, of course,
it’s been especially hard on him. Though, as the months have gone by, we’ve
talked of her less and less and the pain seems to have eased some.
As for the kids, they’ve had different reactions. My daughter
is only two and still asks to see her Grandma sometimes. My six year old son
surprised me when we first told him the sad news. He only said he knew she was
in Heaven so we don’t need to be sad. Though, he does say he misses her every
so often.
This month has been extra stressful with health and work
issues; definitely a time when my husband would have talked a great deal to his
mom for her advice and support. The stress level in our home has been high,
though we’ve been trying to keep things light, so the kids don’t soak it in.
The other night my son was in his room sifting through his
treasure box. He has a large wooden jewelry box filled with glass beads,
plastic jewels, costume rings, and other treasures. He often pretends its
pirate booty! While sorting through this, he came across a broken earring; a
dangling dark metal earring, the color of tarnished pewter, with a flower on the
end. In the middle of the flower sat a purple stone, my late mother-in-law’s
favorite color.
My husband and I were in the kitchen talking when he ran
downstairs and held it up to his dad!
“Daddy!” he said, “I found this at Grandma’s house when she
was still alive and she said I could keep it. But since I know Grandma was your
mommy, I thought this would be more special to you. So, I’m giving it to you to
keep.”
Our eyes filled with tears and neither of us could speak for
a moment. My husband knelt down and gave this sweet boy a big hug and just
said, “Thank you! That’s so nice of you!”
It makes my heart swell to think of it even now, how a small
child, my child, could be so thoughtful and give such a precious treasure to
his daddy. And at a time, when he needed her, his mom, so much. Perhaps she was there
meaning for him to have it just then. In any case, this moment made all my hard
work as a parent, my doubts and fears, efforts, struggles, sleepless nights,
all of it, so worthwhile.
I am filled with the same overwhelming love I felt the
moment I first held this beautiful little boy! I know no matter what else he
learns, what experiences he has, or where life takes him, he will grow up to be a wonderful person. He already is
wonderful.

What a special boy to understand how much the gift would mean to his father. I'm always amazed as how children can so fully grasp what is happening around them even at a young age. I'm so glad that he is such a caring little one. It will serve him well in life.

I can see why you're proud of your little man. Not all six-year-olds are able to show so much empathy. Love it!

Such a beautiful story! Even children are sensitive and bright enough to know that "timing is everything." And clearly, your son learned it from his parents. 🙂
